I would like to give you a quick update to my April 14, 1999 commentary on CARP's meeting with the Ontario Health Minister.

I have been in contact with CARP News.  As of the 15th of April CARP "did receive a reply to their brief from Mrs. Witmer, which left a lot to be desired".  CARP News also told me that, "many of the issues raised were not resolved to CARP's satisfaction."  They also added that a meeting had taken place at the CARP offices with the Ontario Drug Board about adding new medications to the provincial formulary.  CARP News reported that, "the meeting opened doors but did not resolve anything immediately."

CARP News informed me that, "other than a response to CARP's brief in 1998, there was no specific follow-up."  One can only assume this was the reason that another brief had to be left with the Minister in January of 1999.  Maybe this time Mrs. Witmer will actually start giving some straight answers and resolutions to the users of Ontario's health services rather than ignoring them.

One can only hope that the Minister will have a real meeting with Mrs. Morgenthau that will be longer than 30 minutes and that she will make an honest attempt at listening and then coming up with some answers and resolutions to the issues raised in the brief.  It would also be hoped that Mrs. Witmer will not wait till January of 2000 - the stakes are already too high.

Once again, I can not stress how important the work CARP is doing at this time for everyone in Ontario, not just the over fifty generation.

I would like to thank CARP's News for their prompt response to my questions and their help in bringing you this update on CARP's hard work.

Thanks to Dan Goldhar for giving us a link to The Ophiuchus Society from the CARP Resource page.  (Our link to them can be found on our front page.)

If you haven't done so already,   visit the CARP Web Site and read Mrs. Morgenthau's brief for the Ontario Health Minister.
